Full moon night games "Black Ops"

Postby War savage on Wed Oct 12, 2011 10:32 pm

Just wanted to throw out something that we (Coyote Tactical) used to do up in the Phoenix area...still do on occasion. We called these small games "Black Ops" cause they were small, spontaneous and kept to honorable players only. On full moon nights which could last up to 3-4 days. We would round up 10-12 CT or non-CT members and have spontaneous night ops (objectives) in random playing fields. Normally we tried to meet right as the sun goes down or when the moon is at its highest, brightest point in the sky. If you ever went out in the desert on a full moon lit night, it is a pretty cool experience. The moon gives off a crazy white blueish color and as your night vision settles in, your surroundings become lit up almost as if you were in daylight.

This type of game play helps hone in your night movement and trains you on how to use your natural night vision and / or illumination equipment (strobes, tactical lights, gun mounted lights, glow sticks). Believe it or not there are tricks on how to see in super low light conditions that most individuals don't know about.

Before OLC and Operation Irene, we used these opportunities to train ourselves for the night events that went on. Most CT members are pretty well versed on night movement and identifying friend or foe in low light. On occasion we will even do real steal live fire training at night.

Sometimes these small games would break out on a weekday night, but most of the time it would be on a Friday night or weekend night. This recent full moon would have been perfect to have one of these small games.

That's all...carry on!!

The subject of Low light games have been juggled around several times. I think it would be interesting.

I think and early start of 0200 and play into the morning. End at 0600-<0800

I had an opportunity to attend one of these events and sadly had to turn it down based on previous plans. I agree 100% with your points, something like that is great for honing your low light field craft skills and should certainly be incorporated by any milsim team who is likely to attend low light ops in the future.

I haven't checked out the moon since I posted this. It would be nice to start this type of game play during a full moon and progress into complete darkness. Ultimately you want to be used to seeing in total darkness.

Unfortunately I can't organize these games on a regular basis due to obligations that take a lot of my time. I have another one on the way due in December. That's gonna take even more of my time. :(
