How To: Upgrade UTG/WELL Mk96

Postby V-S on Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:40 pm

Many people have often wondered "What parts goes into here?" and what to get. Finding information on what you'll need is a bit hard to find for this specific rifle, so I decided to piece together a page with parts and what said parts will do.

First thing's first. With any sniper's rifle, you need accuracy and range. Afterall, that's what you need to set this rifle apart from the AEG's and DMR's!

Really, the only hopup you should be looking at (and the only one I know of) is the PDI Aps2 Type96 hopup.
http://www.x-fire.org/type96/e.t96_chamber.html Available here, it's going to cost you a pretty penny at roughly $50 without shipping. However, this hopup is centuries ahead of the stock one that goes into the UTGs and WELLs.

With the PDI hopup, you're going to need a new hopup rubber and possibly bucking. Personally, I'd recommend one of the Firefly hard or Laylax brand hard types. The PDI hopup makes your Mk96 use AEG barrels and Rubbers, so these are more parts that you're going to need. Luckily, Trinity generally has Fireflies in stock. http://www.trinityairsoft.com/p-327-hop ... e-fly.aspx (hard types out of stock at the time of writing this) And we also have the Red hard types by Laylax here as well, http://www.trinityairsoft.com/p-514-hop ... aylax.aspx

Now you need a barrel. Barrels can run you anywhere from $30 to $150. A tightbore barrel is what you'll want, and it is all personal choice at this point. No links will be provided, because of the wide availability of tightbores from many different companies and the many different preferences of many different people. Any AEG tightbore will do, so do your measurements on how long you want it to be!

Congratulations, if you've bought any of these parts yet, you're on your way to building a formidable rifle!

Here's where things can start to get tricky. At this point, you've upgraded your barrel and hopup. You've got a rifle that's shooting far and accurately... "what next?" you might ask. Well, let's upgrade the durability.

It's no secret that the UTG/WELL Mk96 rifles use a plastic trigger box. At this point, you can make your own out of metal (if you have the know-how), reinforce yours with whatever you have available, or simply buy a King Arms Aps2 Type96 trigger system. Available at Redwolf for $99 without shipping. (out of stock at the time of writing this) http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/a ... odID=19557 Do some googling, and you may find this part elsewhere as well. Overseas is your best bet.

At this point, you've got one hella nice rifle. But that's not all that's out there for you. There's a selection of APS2 Type96 parts available (Cylinders, cylinder heads, springs, air nozzles, etc) for you to buy. See where your rifle is shooting, and what you don't like. Past this point, it's anybody's decision on what to get. If you have the parts already listed in this guide, then congratulations; because you've built yourself a fairly nice rifle out of what was once a UTG. If not, then save up your money for these parts over time.

Overall however, remember that it's not always the rifle that you use. It's the skill of the player. Sniping and stalking takes patience, precision, knowing your rifle in and out, your limits, and your surroundings. Having a great rifle doesn't make you a great player, so be sure to practice whenever you can!

This guide can also be used for the Maruzen Type96 as well!
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and best of luck upgrading yours!

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Anyone looking for the KA T96 trigger unit, you can find it in stock (at the time of this writing) here at TMC. http://www.tokyo-model.com.hk/ecshop/goods.php?id=3525

TMC =/= TokyoHobby, for those of you worried.

Something else to note is that you can also get a Type96 Zero Trigger instead of the KA. However, I listed the KA as it's cheaper and does what it needs to do (replace that plastic!)
