It seems there a very environmentally unfortunate plans to carry out an open pit mining operation to begin in 2012.
part of the mine's introduction will be the renovation of I-83, closing it to heavy equipment transportation, and the tops of the mountain being taken off.

Yep this has been in the works since shortly after we got the venue. A few of us are involved in the SSSR group here:

Truth be told this will probably happen and we will likely lose the AO at that time. As long as we continue to enjoy the relationship we have had with the Forest Service, finding another permitted spot should be fine.

ya ive heard alot about it this past week in my social issues class, but its definitely something to get involved with to prevent it.

How near to SRBG is it slated?

from maps ive seen it looked flush to the area, but that raised my concerns of the waist rock and sediment storage site being in that area.

Its about two mile north up the dirt road. We have been up there a few times and there is some minor machinery, some test shafts, and some other minor infrastructure already there for the bio impact study. Like Clayton said when the actual pit mine goes in it'll basically spill over right into the AO. I have not confirmed 100% with Forest Service it will put our space out of play but from what I see of the plans its pretty much a given.

In addition to that, i don't know if I-83 will even be accessible due to the use of it being annexed for use of heavy equipment.
