G&G M120 spring upgrade troubleshooting

Postby Julian on Sat Sep 18, 2010 10:07 pm

Hi all,

I dropped a M120 spring into my G&G GR16 Carbine, and using an Intellect 9.6v 3000mAh battery, it only pulled the spring about 10 times (sounding VERY labored) and then died. It also smelled like it cooked my battery, and the battery felt VERY hot to the touch (hotter than playing a few games in the summer hot) after it died. I haven't tried the battery again but I'm pretty sure it's out of commission.

My question is: is the issue my battery or motor? I've read that G&G stock motors can pull M120 springs on airsoftGI reviews, and I'm confident my battery just couldn't take it.

Should I look into buying a 10.8v 2200-3500mAh battery? Do I need to upgrade to a high-torque motor?

Thanks!

Sounds like your motor.
Batteries don't generally smell when they're underpowered.

oh okay--many thanks for the replies guys, just the info I needed!

Any model motors you would specifically recommend? I just see "high torque G&G motor" on airsoftGI

I like the G&P motors. The G&P M120 motor would probably do well for an M120... but I absolutely love love love my G&P M160 motor.

awesome, thanks again for the good advice Axis. The m160 seems a bit overkill for me, and it's out of stock on airsoftGI. M120 seems to have great reviews too

edit: any word on the battery? do I *need* a 10.8 volt for this or will a 9.6 do the trick?

The M160 will pull an M130 spring on a 9.6. It pulls a LOT of current, though. You will need to upgrade your fuse to a 20 amp one, if shooting semi-auto only, and possibly 25 amp if you're shooting full-auto. It will blow anything lower than 20 within 30 seconds, if you don't shoot SLOW (less than a round a second. Faster than that, and the fuse heats up, then blows).

The M120 should pull less current, BUT, you are running it at its maximum safe load, which means it will be struggling more than the M160 motor, so in the end, it may pull as much, or more current than the M160, since you aren't running the M160 anywhere to a point where it needs to struggle. Also, the M160 motor will have a slower ROF than the M120. Probably not by much, but it should be notably slower.

Don't bother calling "Surrender" on me, unless you are A) Right by me or B) Shooting 450+ with .20's. I WILL shoot you if I see you, otherwise. I am stubborn, and don't like to surrender. Consider yourself warned.

Looks like there's no easy answer to this then,

Where can I get the fuses, and where on the gun are they? In the gearbox? On the motor? Should I scrounge for one or is it something I need to buy new?

I'm leaning towards wanting a 9.6v still. Maybe a 10.8 if they come into stock anytime soon. Sounds like replacing this fuse is a must as well. Thanks Brian

The fuse is located where you connect the battery to. Fuses can be found at radio shack. I bought 20amp 32v automotive fuses and they are fine... PN: 270-1074. a 10.8 is not really needed. Might as well go lipo if you want to go with a 10.8 battery. Usually not too many guns can fit 10.8 batteries.

That battery will pull an m120 without a problem. I can pull an m160 on an 8.4v 1200mah mini with the M160... I assume that you would be able to do the same for an m120 on an m120.

You can get fuses at walmart or any auto-parts store.
