Another Magazine malfunction thread

Postby IconarmsDealer on Tue May 17, 2011 10:56 am

Ok I have two AK style magazine, Both mid caps,Brand.....Well Im not sure I know they are NOT MAG brand but look almost identical. These came witha VFC Ak that I bought from another TAC member, They do have a Russian Arsenal emblem and are Orange in color..
Malfunction: Loaded 40 60 Rds...Fits 4-8 feed fine. Then the BBS jam inside the Magazine.Looking into the feeding holes the BBs look as if they are doubled up and jammed .

To clear: Inserted jam rod a few times...Results..A few BBs fall out.Still jammed
After fussing with it and getting it empty Loaded 30...Results Still jammed

Dissassembled,Inspected, Follower,Spring, Feeding chutes all Looks good
,No dirt, or other junk found
Applied Dry PTFE lube and reassemble

Results-Loaded and test...Still Jammed.

any input is welcomed

I have star midcaps I lubricate them with %100 silicone oil.

Its called a double stack magazine. The BBs almost side side by side rather then on top of each other. They hold more BBs then a single stack but are prone to this issue. You can try a slicker BB that seems to help sometimes.

I know this works with double stack pistol mags, but I'm not sure how it would work in an AK midcap unless you could pull the hopper down...

But assuming you can pull the hopper down, do that and give the magazine some shakes. This should ensure your bbs fall into double stacking correctly. If you can't access the hopper, I guess jamming something down there would work as well.

I would try lubing them up with some 100% silicon lube, you can get a can of this at ACE hardware, green label can. Don't use anything with petroleum in it, as this will destroy the hop-up! Lubing my mags usually works for me. I have to do it to my AK mids and M4 mids (both mag brand) every few months.

Well..If the silicon is liquid I see a dirt issue there,as well as possiable hop-up.I will try this
As for shaking, well I have shaken, Bashed them against a hard surface, and jammed the beveled edge of my Jam rod in there...
I will try it a second time.Again thanks guys!

Silicon Lube is a dry lube, I use it a lot, just about the only think I cant do with it is lube my folding knife mechanisms, they tend to work worse on silicon lube.

One thing people haven't asked is: What size are your BB's? If the BB's are a smaller size, you may have problems with them getting stuck while trying to "pass" eachother. A larger diameter BB may stop this problem.

You may also have defective magazines. What you need is a depth gauge/depth micrometer with a needle point, so you can measure from the center of the feed tube to the outside edge, and double it. If its very close to double the size of your BB's, it means your BB's are too small for the magazine, or the magazines are defective.
